Limpopo will host the Limpopo Championship – the first golf tournament in the country to be co-sanctioned by European Challenge Tour and Sunshine Tour.
In only a year, this tournament has become a fully-fledged international golf tournament and this year’s prize will be R3.5 million (€218 000). The Championship will start on January 30 and be held at two golf courses, Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate and Euphoria Lifestyle Golf Estate.
“We see this as a boost to tourism in our province but most importantly as a vote of confidence in the capability to host mega golf events like this one,” said MEC of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Thabo Mokone, at the media launch this week.
The CEO of the Limpopo Tourism Agency, Nomasonto Ndlovu said the tournament would highlight the diverse tourism experience of the province. “The Waterberg region has a myriad of tourist destinations like the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, the Waterberg Biosphere, Makapans Valley World Heritage Site, Marakele National Park and many private game reserves, to name but a few.”
The tournament will have 95 players from both Sunshine Tour and Europe Tour. The 204 players will compete over two days before the top 60 players and ties progress to the weekend to contest the title.
