Reports show growth in W Cape tourism

Written by
Western Cape Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier, has welcomed the reports from the tourism industry indicating good growth in domestic and inbound tourism in the Western Cape.

Tour operators reported a 5% increase in bookings and arrivals to the province with Germany and the UK remains the top tourism markets.

Maynier said the new United Airlines flight between New York and Cape Town International Airport – launched mid-December last year – had increased the number of tourists from the US.

“This is a positive indication of recovery in the tourism sector following the drought, and we remain optimistic ahead of the official statistics, which will be published by South African Tourism toward the end of the month,” said Maynier.

Reports indicated that top tourist attractions included wine tasting, cultural and sustainable experiences, local dining, events, and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.

In advance of the tourism season, the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism worked with municipalities in the Western Cape to ensure they were ready for tourists by increasing staff and doing beach clean-ups.

Maynier said the provincial government remained focused on sector growth across all regions of the province and thanked all those working in the tourism industry for continuing to provide service excellence to those visiting the Western Cape.
