Cape Town’s Norval Foundation introduces summertime picnics

The Norval Foundation in Cape Town, Western Cape, will launch Sculpture Garden picnics on International Garden Day (October 21). Picnic baskets will be available from The Skotnes Restaurant Kiosk all summer.

Specifically created by The Skotnes Restaurant’s Executive Chef, Phil de Villiers, with families in mind, picnic baskets can be ordered in advance, and the price includes admission to the Norval Foundation’s museum and gallery spaces, as well as the extensive Sculpture Garden. Sculptures such as the Angus Taylor ‘Holderbestolder’ made from Belfast Gabbri granite and steel, form the ideal climbing playground for children to explore while parents enjoy a relaxed picnic. The sculpture was made in consultation with a child psychologist and is centrally placed in the kiddies’ play area.

Baskets are packed with fresh, local and seasonal produce in keeping with The Skotnes Restaurant’s philosophy of supporting local, small-batch food suppliers. Take-away coffees and a range of Italian gelato can also be ordered to enjoy while exploring the Sculpture Garden.

Specially designed picnic bags for children will also ensure that the little ones can enjoy their own picnic. There will also be a range of fun activities, such as balloon sculpting, face-painting and a magician.

“Our family-friendly picnics are one of the elements at Norval Foundation I am most excited about,” says De Villiers.

There are a variety of picnic basket options to choose from, such as the South African Classic Picnic Menu, the South African Gourmet Picnic Menu and the Vegetarian Gourmet Picnic.

Guests can pick up their baskets from The Skotnes Restaurant, and all picnic baskets are inclusive of museum admission.

At the picnic launch on October 21, guests will enjoy a choice of classic or gourmet picnic while listening to relaxing music. Picnic baskets will include options such as bobotie samosas, roosterbrood with smoked snoek pâté and soet patat hummus, Raspberry Hertzoggies and a range of desserts created by in-house Pastry Chef, Isca Scholtz.
