Roots and Journeys launches its second camp Nokanyana at BTTE

Written by
Roots and Journeys is the culmination of husband and wife Jacques van der Merwe and Anna Butterfield’s many years experience in Botswana. Having previously managed some of the country’s top camps in 2014 they embarked on their own project. Mopiri, meaning “little island” in the local Bayei language, opened in 2015 and is now the flagship camp of the new Roots & Journeys group. From its opening Mopiri has proven to be extremely popular with both tour operators and clients. To complete the Roots & Journeys circuit two new camps will open in 2018/19.

The Roots & Journeys concept is to offer the best value for money lodges and camps in Botswana combining land, water and sand, showcasing the best of the country.

“Our aim is to create a circuit that opens up Botswana in an affordable way to a bigger market including families and multi-generation travellers”.

Mopiri: The “Little Island” hidden away on the Western side of the Okavango Delta, Mopiri offers guests the perfect water camp experience. Seven spacious en-suite tents and three family units stand on the edge of Weboro Lagoon, underneath large shady fig trees and nestled between the palms. Guests will have the opportunity to base themselves at the camp and then explore deep into the Delta and stay at one of the fly camps on Kgatsetswe or Jeranindi Island. Mopiri’s private airstrip is only a five-minute boat ride from camp.

Nokanyana: The “Little River” situated close to the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, 120 kilometres from Maun. The camp is due to open in 2018 and consists of seven standard rooms and three family suites.
There is a large main area overlooking the river consisting of a lounge, bar, dining room and boma. As the group’s land camp it is a great base from which to explore Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve. Access is via the Khwai Airstrip.

Tsau Hills: The “Little Hill” situated in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Tsau is the last of three developments and is due for completion in late 2018/2019. The lodge is situated in its own 40,000-hectare concession and will comprise of ten rooms built around the hill. Activities on offer will include game drives and bush walks.

Tswii Mokoro Trails: Roots & Journeys operates Tswii Mokoro Trails from Maun, perfect for clients who don’t have much time to spend in the Okavango Delta. Trails range from a half day excursion up to three to four nights exploring different islands in the Delta. Experienced mokoro guides will share first hand knowledge of the fascinating flora and fauna of the area, and tell many a folk tale whilst poling along the vast waterways.

What’s new for 2018?

  • In 2018 we will be opening Nokanyana and starting work on Tsau Hills.
  • Roots & Journeys have teamed up to support the Wild Bird Trust. Mopiri is currently working alongside The Wild Bird Trust and have set up a research camp on the island. This will provide guests with the opportunity to learn about their current research, or simply enjoy a short guided bird walk around the island.
