Zambalawi : A new country in Africa?

Written by

Safari and beach holidays are becoming increasingly popular but the logistics of getting from remote game reserves to pristine beaches can be tiring.

Why not enjoy a refreshing alternative - a new 13 night ‘Zambalawi' itinerary, pairing Zambia and Malawi's most secluded safari spots with the tropical waters of Lake Malawi.

The new 13 night itinerary includes some of Africa's most intimate, owner-run properties in top game viewing spots, rounded off with a few nights relaxing on the shores of Malawi's ‘calendar lake'.

The trip includes a visit to Malawi's hottest new luxury eco venture, Tongole Wilderness Lodge.  Set in the breathtakingly beautiful Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole will open its doors on 1 April.  With just four luxury chalets overlooking the Bua River, Tongole will appeal to those who seek an exceptional wilderness experience in one of Africa's - and possibly Malawi's last - truly unspoilt wildlife areas.

Three nights at KAFUNTA RIVER LODGE****+ Eight private chalets set on the banks of the Luangwa River in the game rich South Luangwa National park.  Get your safari fix with day and night game drives as well as walking safaris.

Two nights at ISLAND BUSH CAMP -a small, personalised camp constructed afresh each year, located in a remote area in the very South of the National Park ideal for exploring the unspoilt wilderness on foot.

Two nights at LUANGWA WILDERNESS LODGE*** - the only property in Luambe National Park, offering an unrivalled private wilderness experience.  Accommodation is provided in five safari style tents built on wooden platforms.

Three nights at  TONGOLE WILDERNESS LODGE***** Set in the beautiful Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole is set to become one of Africa's most talked about lodges, opening its doors on 1 April. It will appeal to Africa lovers, true romantics and those who seek an exceptional wilderness experience in one of Africa's - and possibly Malawi's last - truly unspoilt wildlife areas.

Tongole is a place to be as active or an relaxed as your clients choose. They can be paddled down the river, turn a corner and find a surprise banquet awaiting them; Take short or long forest walks on untouched pathways; Meet the local villagers, who Tongole does much to support...or simply relax in one of the four luxurious, thatched riverside suites, each with large sunken baths and spectacular raised wooden decks overlooking the Bua River.  This is a haven for recharging the batteries and getting close to nature.

Three nights at NGALA BEACH LODGE**** - situated on the Northern Lakeshore of Lake Malawi.  Relatively new owners Chris and Sandy have succeeded in upgrading the existing property into the luxurious 4* lodge it is today, with just.

It has stunning views of both the lake and the Vipya Mountains, and is one of the few places on the lake that offers a view of both sunrise and sunset over the water. They provide guests with the highest levels of service, yet the place is warm and unpretentious.

Whilst they offer a wide range of activities on the Lake (don't miss their fabulous sunset "swimdowner" cruises), the highlight for many is a walking visit to the local village, which is delightful. And at $175 rack, it's a bargain too!
